Nationwide Strike: Nurses and Midwives Join NLC/TUC Action Amidst Power Outage

Lagos, Nigeria – June 2, 2024

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has officially announced that its members will join the ongoing nationwide strike organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). This decision has further intensified the country’s current crisis, following the widespread power outage caused by the electricity workers’ union strike.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that the National Grid was intentionally disabled by unionized electricity workers who are demanding a higher minimum wage. This has plunged the entire nation into darkness, exacerbating the already critical situation.

As a result of the labour action, all entry points to the domestic terminal at Lagos Airport are currently inaccessible, leaving passengers stranded and leading to the suspension of all flight operations. The airport, usually bustling with activity, is now eerily silent as passengers await updates and hope for a swift resolution to the strike.

The inclusion of nurses and midwives in the strike is expected to have a severe impact on healthcare services across the country. Hospitals and clinics are likely to face significant disruptions, adding to the challenges faced by citizens in accessing essential services during this period of unrest.

The NLC and TUC have called for the indefinite strike to pressure the government into addressing their demands for better wages and working conditions. The government has yet to issue an official response, and negotiations have so far failed to yield a resolution.

Citizens across Nigeria are bracing for continued disruptions in power supply, transportation, and healthcare services as the strike progresses. The situation remains fluid, with many hoping for a swift resolution to the labour dispute to restore normalcy and ensure the well-being of the nation.

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
