Port Harcourt, Nigeria – February 14, 2026

The (NDDC) and the (REA) have formalized a strategic partnership to expand electricity access across the Niger Delta region, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that signals a renewed push toward sustainable development.

The agreement was signed by NDDC Managing Director, , and REA Director General, , underscoring both institutions’ commitment to bridging the region’s electricity access gap.
A Unified Approach to Power Delivery
The collaboration is designed to align planning, funding, and execution strategies between the two agencies, ensuring that electrification projects are delivered efficiently and sustainably. By pooling technical expertise and financial resources, the partnership aims to accelerate the deployment of reliable power infrastructure in underserved and unserved communities throughout the Niger Delta.

The MoU provides a framework for coordinated project identification, implementation, and monitoring—reducing duplication of efforts and maximizing impact. It also emphasizes renewable and decentralized energy solutions, including mini-grids and standalone solar systems, tailored to the unique geographical and socio-economic realities of the region.

Driving Productivity and Economic Growth
Access to reliable electricity remains a critical challenge in many Niger Delta communities, limiting business growth, healthcare delivery, education outcomes, and overall quality of life. Through this partnership, NDDC and REA aim to unlock new economic opportunities by powering small and medium-sized enterprises, agro-processing hubs, schools, and health facilities.

Chief Dr. Samuel Ogbuku noted that improved electricity access is central to the NDDC’s broader development mandate, which focuses on sustainable infrastructure and inclusive growth. Dr. Abba Aliyu highlighted REA’s technical capacity and national experience in rural electrification as key assets that will support impactful implementation across the region.

Toward Sustainable and Inclusive Development
The Niger Delta, rich in natural resources yet challenged by infrastructure deficits, stands to benefit significantly from a coordinated electrification drive. By combining NDDC’s regional development mandate with REA’s expertise in rural power solutions, the partnership aims to deliver long-term, community-centered energy systems that foster resilience and self-reliance.

As implementation begins, stakeholders and community leaders are expected to play an active role in ensuring that projects meet local needs and deliver measurable improvements in livelihoods.

The collaboration between NDDC and REA marks a decisive step toward closing the electricity gap in the Niger Delta—bringing the promise of reliable power, economic vitality, and sustainable progress closer to reality.
