NELFUND ADVANCES EDUCATION ACCESS NATIONWIDE

Abuja, Nigeria — March 2, 2026

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has once again reaffirmed its role as a major catalyst for broadening access to higher education across the nation with continued disbursements to students for the 2025/2026 academic session. The initiative, part of the Federal Government’s strategic efforts to remove financial barriers to learning, is providing both tuition and upkeep support to thousands of eligible students across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

Launched in May 2024, NELFUND was established to provide interest-free loans that cover tuition fees and living expenses, helping students stay in school and focus on their academic goals. In its first year of operation, the programme recorded substantial uptake — with hundreds of thousands of students applying for support, and significant sums disbursed nationwide.

The current disbursement cycle has seen funds released to beneficiaries studying at universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country. The dual support structure — paying tuition directly to institutions and providing upkeep allowances to students — aims to ensure uninterrupted academic pursuits for those who might otherwise struggle to finance their education.

Since its inception, NELFUND has leveraged digital platforms to streamline the loan application and verification process, making it easier for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to access support. This emphasis on efficiency, transparency, and inclusivity has been widely commended by education stakeholders, who view the fund as a transformative intervention in Nigeria’s education financing landscape.

The impact of NELFUND’s nationwide rollout is evident in the growing number of students benefiting each academic cycle. According to recent data, millions of applications have been processed since launch, with substantial portions of funds disbursed directly to both institutions and individual students.

As Nigeria continues to prioritize human capital development and equitable access to education, NELFUND’s ongoing efforts are expected to play a critical role in empowering the next generation of leaders and professionals.
