NERC Directs DisCos to Clarify New Tariff Implementation

In response to the April 2024 Supplementary Multi-Year Tariff Order, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a directive to all Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) aimed at ensuring clarity and fairness in the implementation process.

The directive mandates DisCos to take the following actions:

  1. Maintain Approved Band A Feeders: DisCos must ensure that only the newly approved Band A feeders listed in the April 2024 supplementary orders are designated as Band A for vending to prepaid customers and billing for postpaid customers.
  2. Publish Approved Band A Feeder Schedule: DisCos are required to promptly post on their websites the schedule of approved Band A feeders affected by the rate review, providing transparency to customers.
  3. Set Up Online Portal: By April 10, 2024, all DisCos must establish a portal on their websites allowing customers to check their current bands by entering their meter or account numbers, facilitating easy access to information.
  4. Issue Refunds: Customers incorrectly billed at the new rate must be refunded through energy tokens no later than April 11, 2024. DisCos are also mandated to file evidence of compliance with the Commission by April 12, 2024.
  5. Monitoring Compliance: NERC will closely monitor compliance with the outlined requirements and provide ongoing support to stakeholders as needed.

This directive underscores NERC’s commitment to ensuring equitable practices within Nigeria’s electricity sector and protecting consumer rights. It aims to address concerns and streamline the implementation of the new tariff order for the benefit of all stakeholders.
