NHIA Signs MOU with NBS to Revolutionize Healthcare Delivery in Nigeria

Abuja, October 8, 2025

In a major step towards transforming healthcare delivery in Nigeria, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The signing ceremony, which took place in Abuja on Wednesday, marks the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at using data to drive better health outcomes across the country.

The collaboration is anchored on four key pillars and is designed to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness of the Nigerian healthcare system. Both agencies emphasized that the partnership will prioritize data collection, analysis, and dissemination to inform policy decisions and ensure that healthcare services meet the specific needs of Nigerians.
“This MOU signifies a shared commitment to evidence-based healthcare planning and delivery,” said representatives from NHIA and NBS at the event. “By leveraging reliable and comprehensive data, we can identify gaps, allocate resources more effectively, and ensure that no Nigerian is left behind.”

The initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to expand health coverage and improve healthcare outcomes nationwide. Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Government has emphasized the importance of using technology and data to modernize public services, especially in critical sectors like health.
With this partnership, the NHIA and NBS are expected to streamline efforts in monitoring healthcare trends, evaluating program performance, and supporting the rollout of the National Health Insurance Scheme to underserved populations.

Stakeholders in the health sector have lauded the move as a timely and strategic step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Nigeria.
