NIGERIA @65: OSUN STATE GOVERNOR GRANTS AMNESTY TO 36 CONVICTS

Osogbo, Osun State – October 1, 2025

In celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has granted amnesty to 36 convicts across the state. The move, announced through a press release signed by his spokesperson Mallam Olawale Rasheed, reflects the governor’s commitment to justice, mercy, and national renewal.
The amnesty followed recommendations by the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, which reviewed cases of prisoners convicted primarily for minor offences such as stealing and conspiracy. Many of the beneficiaries had already served significant portions of their sentences, underscoring the gesture as one of compassion and second chances.
Governor Adeleke emphasized that the pardon aligns with the spirit of Nigeria’s Independence Day, symbolizing hope, justice, and the opportunity for a fresh start. “This decision embodies the essence of independence — freedom, justice, and the power of renewal,” the governor stated.
Out of the 36 convicts, 29 were released from the Ilesa Correctional Centre while the remaining seven were freed from the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre. The governor’s office hopes this act of clemency will inspire positive change both for the individuals involved and the communities they return to.
As Nigeria marks its 65 years of sovereignty, this amnesty serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward a more inclusive and just society.
