Nigeria Demands Full Investigation into Death of Its Footballer in Uganda
The Nigerian government has called for a thorough investigation into the death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who died under unclear circumstances in Uganda. The Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has demanded a full autopsy and a transparent inquiry to unravel the events leading to Lawal’s death.
In a statement issued by the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Nigerian government expressed its commitment to ensuring a comprehensive and transparent investigation.
Describing the incident as tragic, Dabiri-Erewa noted that authorities are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting detailed interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death.
Preliminary reports indicate that Lawal arrived at a shopping mall in his vehicle to meet his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national. Shortly after, at approximately 8:00 am, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony of the mall. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Nigerian government has vowed to closely monitor the investigation and ensure that justice is served. “The Nigerian government will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation into this sad incident,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
The death of Abubakar Lawal has raised concerns among Nigerians in Uganda and the diaspora, with many calling for clarity and accountability. The Nigerian High Commission in Uganda is working closely with local authorities to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to uncover the truth.
As the investigation progresses, the Nigerian government has urged Ugandan authorities to expedite the process and provide regular updates to ensure transparency and justice for the deceased and his family.
