Nigerian Legislators Advocate for New Aircraft for Tinubu and Shettima

Abuja, Nigeria — June 13, 2024 — The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence has urged the federal government to promptly acquire new aircraft for President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. This recommendation follows a detailed report from the committee’s technical subcommittee, which assessed the condition and safety of the Presidential Air Fleet (PAF).

The committee’s report highlights significant concerns about the age and operational reliability of the current aircraft used by President Tinubu. The 19-year-old plane has been deemed costly to maintain, leading to frequent grounding periods and heightened operational expenses for the fleet.

“The Committee is of the strong and informed opinion that considering the fragile structure of the Nigerian federation and recognizing the dire consequences of any foreseen or unforeseen mishap that may arise as a result of technical/operational inadequacy of the Presidential Air Fleet, it is in the best interest of the country to procure two additional aircraft as recommended,” the report states.

Legislators argue that new aircraft will enhance the safety and efficiency of the nation’s top leaders’ travel, ensuring uninterrupted and secure operations. The committee’s call comes amid broader discussions on enhancing national security and operational effectiveness within the federal government.

The recommendation underscores the importance of maintaining a reliable and state-of-the-art presidential fleet, reflecting the high stakes associated with the mobility and security of the country’s leadership. The proposed acquisition aims to mitigate risks and reduce the long-term costs associated with maintaining aging aircraft.

The House of Representatives is expected to deliberate on the committee’s recommendations in the coming weeks, with a decision anticipated soon to address the identified concerns and ensure the safety and effectiveness of the Presidential Air Fleet.
