NMA to Begin Monthly Psychiatric Evaluation of Inmates
Abuja, Nigeria — November 1, 2025
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced plans to commence monthly psychiatric evaluations for all inmates across Nigeria’s correctional facilities starting next month.
The initiative, unveiled by the First Vice President of the Association, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, during a visit to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Headquarters in Abuja, aims to strengthen mental health support within the nation’s correctional system.
As part of the visit, the NMA, in collaboration with producers of reusable sanitary pads, made a donation of sanitary pads for all female inmates nationwide. Dr. Olowojebutu explained that the gesture is part of a broader campaign to promote mental well-being, restore dignity, and ensure equal access to healthcare for all inmates.
“We believe every inmate deserves a fair chance at rehabilitation. Addressing mental health is key to genuine reform,” said Dr. Olowojebutu. “Through regular psychiatric assessments, we can identify issues early, provide the right care, and prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society.”
In his response, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, expressed appreciation to the NMA for the partnership, noting that the initiative would significantly enhance healthcare delivery for both inmates and correctional staff.
“This collaboration marks a new chapter in correctional health management. Rehabilitation is taking a more human face—one where care, education, and reform go hand in hand to give inmates a fair chance at change,” Nwakuche said.
The monthly psychiatric evaluation program is expected to be rolled out in phases, beginning with major correctional centers before extending nationwide. It underscores the NMA’s growing advocacy for mental health inclusion and its commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian—regardless of circumstance—is left behind in access to quality healthcare.
