Northern Governors Sympathise with Victims of Singa Market Fire; Call for Proactive, Tech-Driven Safety Measures

The (NSGF) has expressed deep sympathy with traders, shop owners and all victims affected by the devastating Singa Market fire incident in , describing the tragedy as painful and distressing.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Forum, the Chairman of the NSGF and Governor of , , CON, said the inferno was particularly heartbreaking, coming barely weeks after a similar outbreak in the same market, thereby compounding the losses and emotional trauma suffered by already vulnerable traders.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya lamented the recurring spate of market fires across the northern region, noting that such incidents have continued to erode livelihoods, disrupt economic activities and push many families into hardship. He stressed that the persistent nature of these disasters demands urgent, comprehensive and technology-driven preventive measures by both state and federal authorities.

According to the NSGF Chairman, beyond immediate relief efforts, there is a pressing need for proactive strategies aimed at preventing future occurrences. He advocated for the deployment of modern fire detection and suppression systems in major markets, improved market planning and infrastructure, stricter enforcement of safety regulations, and sustained public enlightenment campaigns targeted 4at traders and market operators.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya further emphasized that safeguarding commercial hubs must become a priority, given their central role in sustaining local economies and supporting thousands of small and medium-scale enterprises across the North.

The Forum also commended the swift and courageous response of the , security agencies, the (NEMA), and other emergency responders and good Samaritans whose timely intervention helped contain the blaze and prevent further destruction.

The NSGF Chairman extended the Forum’s heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Kano State, as well as to all individuals and business owners who suffered losses in the inferno.
He prayed Almighty Allah to grant strength and restoration for the victims and urged them not to lose hope in the face of the devastating setback, assuring that northern governors remain committed to policies and partnerships that will enhance disaster preparedness, protect livelihoods, and promote safer commercial environments across the region.
