NPHCDA Inaugurates Lagos Vaccine Hub To Strengthen Nigeria’s Immunization Supply Chain

LAGOS, NIGERIA – May 30, 2026

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has commissioned the Lagos Vaccine Hub (Cold and Dry Store) in Oshodi, Lagos State, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its immunization supply chain and improve access to life-saving vaccines across the country.
Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the commissioning ceremony, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of NPHCDA, Dr. Muyi Aina, described the facility as a major investment in healthcare infrastructure that will help ensure the timely delivery of potent vaccines to communities nationwide.

According to Dr. Aina, the Lagos Vaccine Hub is part of a modern three-hub national vaccine distribution system designed to improve storage capacity, operational efficiency and vaccine delivery across Nigeria. He said the initiative demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to closing critical healthcare infrastructure gaps and expanding access to quality immunization services.
“The commissioning of the Lagos Vaccine Hub marks a major step in strengthening Nigeria’s immunization supply chain and expanding access to potent and life-saving vaccines across the country,” he stated.
Dr. Aina explained that the Lagos facility is the first of three mega vaccine storage hubs planned under the new distribution architecture. Additional hubs located in Abuja and Kano are expected to become operational in the near future.

He noted that the Abuja hub will serve the North-Central and South-East geopolitical zones, while the Kano hub will cater to the North-West and North-East regions. The Lagos facility will provide vaccine storage and distribution services for the South-West and South-South zones.

The NPHCDA boss said the new system replaces the previous arrangement of one national cold store and six zonal stores, which were constrained by limited storage capacity and outdated equipment. The upgraded infrastructure, he added, is designed to meet Nigeria’s growing immunization needs, support routine vaccination programmes, facilitate rapid outbreak response and accommodate future vaccine initiatives.

Providing details of the facility, Dr. Aina disclosed that the Lagos Vaccine Hub is strategically located near the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Apapa Port, enabling efficient distribution of vaccines and immunization commodities. The hub features 1,152 cubic metres of cold and freezer storage capacity alongside more than 15,312 cubic metres of dry storage space for syringes and other immunization supplies.

He revealed that the facility is expected to serve over 90 million Nigerians across the South-West and South-South regions through 2035. In addition to storage and distribution functions, the hub also includes training halls aimed at strengthening the capacity of vaccine logistics professionals across the country.

Dr. Aina commended President Tinubu for prioritizing investments in the health sector and acknowledged the contributions of key stakeholders who supported the project. He expressed appreciation to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, development partners including the World Bank, Gavi, UNICEF and WHO, as well as the Lagos State Government for their collaboration in delivering the facility.

The commissioning of the Lagos Vaccine Hub is expected to enhance the efficiency of Nigeria’s immunization programme, reduce vaccine wastage, improve distribution networks and strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies while ensuring that millions of Nigerians have access to safe and effective vaccines.
