NUGA AT UNIJOS CLOSES; BENSON IDAHOSA UNIVERSITY LEADS MEDAL TABLE

University of Jos, Plateau State — 16th November 2025.

The 27th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) has officially drawn to a close at the University of Jos, marking the end of a memorable week filled with colour, excitement, and exceptional athletic performances. The closing ceremony, held at the university’s sports arena, brought together top government officials, traditional rulers, and academic leaders who celebrated the spirit of unity, excellence, and sportsmanship that defined the 2025 Games.


In a remarkable show of talent and determination, Benson Idahosa University emerged as the overall champion of the 27th NUGA, topping the medal table with 31 medals. Host institution, the University of Jos, followed closely with 49 medals, securing second place, while the University of Benin claimed third position with 34 medals.


The ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries, including the Governor of Plateau State, represented by the Deputy Governor, Josephine Piyo; the Emir of Zuru; the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS); and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan. Their presence underscored the national importance of the Games and the role of sports in fostering unity across Nigeria’s diverse university communities.


This year’s edition was widely praised for its high level of organization, competitive spirit, and the camaraderie shared among athletes from across the country. As the flames of the Games were extinguished, participants departed with renewed friendships, unforgettable memories, and hopes for greater achievements in the next edition.


The University of Jos, as host, received commendations for its hospitality and world-class facilities, which contributed significantly to the success of the 27th NUGA.
With the closing ceremony concluded, the curtain falls on an unforgettable celebration of talent, resilience, and national pride—until NUGA gathers again.
