The Ogun State Government has launched the Nigeria Solar for Health Project (NISHP), a major renewable energy initiative designed to provide affordable and reliable solar power for healthcare facilities across the state. The event, which took place yesterday at Mitros Hall, Abeokuta, also featured the inauguration of the State Steering and Technical Committees for the project.

Hon. Prince Dapo Okubadejo, the Honourable Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser to the Ogun State Government, represented His Excellency, Prince (Dr.) Dapo Abiodun, CON, at the official launch.

In his address, Governor Abiodun described the NISHP as a landmark collaboration between the Ogun State Government, the European Union (EU), and NTU International, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Ogun State’s ISEYA development blueprint.

According to the Governor, the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to promoting inclusive growth, environmental sustainability, and social progress through innovative energy solutions.

“We are rewriting the story of accessibility to basic healthcare in Ogun State by strengthening our primary healthcare system and unlocking prosperity in rural areas,” Governor Abiodun stated.

“This project will not only improve healthcare delivery and create employment opportunities but will also power nearby small and medium-scale enterprises, boosting the local economy and transforming lives across the state.”

The Nigeria Solar for Health Project aims to tackle one of the most persistent challenges facing healthcare facilities—unreliable power supply—by deploying clean and renewable solar energy to primary health centres across Ogun State.

During the event, Hon. Prince Dapo Okubadejo formally inaugurated the Ogun State Steering and Technical Committees for NISHP, naming key members to lead the implementation and oversight of the initiative.

The committee is chaired by Hon. Prince Dapo Okubadejo, with Hon. Olaolu Olabimtan, Commissioner for Budget and Planning, serving as Vice Chairman, and Hon. Damilola Otubanjo, Special Adviser on SDGs/Water Resources, appointed as Secretary. Other members include Dr. Tomi Coker (Commissioner for Health), Hon. Adebola Emmanuel Sofela (Commissioner for Industry, Trade & Investment), Engr. Babajide Onakoya (Special Adviser on Energy), Engr. Nasiru Bello (Team Manager, NISHP), and Mr. Tinyan Ogiehor (Manager, NISHP).

The launch marks a significant milestone in Ogun State’s ongoing efforts to deliver the dividends of democracy through tangible, measurable impacts on citizens’ well-being.

The government reaffirmed its resolve to continue implementing forward-thinking policies and partnerships that address the state’s development challenges while improving access to quality healthcare services and sustainable energy.
