Ogun State Leads in Minimum Wage Implementation: Governor Abiodun Pledges Swift Action

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced that his administration is working tirelessly to implement the new minimum wage for state workers, signaling that Ogun will not lag behind in this initiative. This commitment was made during a meeting with the leadership of organized labor at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun emphasized that workers in the state have been crucial to the economic progress witnessed in Ogun, and his administration is committed to ensuring that they are adequately compensated.

“On the new minimum wage, all hands are on deck working assiduously, and I am sure that as always, we will not be number two in the implementation of the minimum wage,” the governor assured.

He further explained that the state government is focused on creative solutions to finance the new wage without causing undue strain on the state’s resources. “We should be creative, more efficient, block loopholes, and increase our revenue so that we can afford to pay the new minimum wage comfortably,” Abiodun added.

The governor’s commitment to workers comes on the heels of a significant economic growth in Ogun State. The state’s budget has surged from less than N400 billion at the beginning of his administration to N703 billion, with a performance rate of 80%. Governor Abiodun also revealed that the government is preparing for a trillion Naira budget for the coming year.

As part of his broader strategy to manage the economic fallout from the federal government’s removal of the fuel subsidy, Governor Abiodun highlighted his administration’s focus on energy transition. “We have commenced the energy transition program by converting our mass transit buses to CNG and launching electric motorcycles and tricycles,” he said.

In collaboration with transport unions, the state is ramping up efforts to expand the availability of alternative energy sources. The federal government is supporting these initiatives by providing CNG kits and subsidized food supplies, including rice. In addition, the federal government has committed to sending 20 CNG buses to Ogun State, while the state government will add 100 more CNG buses to alleviate transportation
