OPERATION WHIRL STROKE WARNS CRIMINAL ELEMENTS FUELLING CYCLE OF VIOLENCE IN BENUE

Troops of the Joint Task Force have swiftly responded to two separate security breaches in , reinforcing their commitment to curbing violence and criminality in the region.
Attack on Herders Foiled, One Victim Evacuated
On 15 February 2026, troops were alerted to an attack on two herders at Amua Village, situated within the stretch of land from Daudu to Umenger/Ukpiam in Guma LGA. Personnel deployed at Umenger immediately mobilised to the scene.
Upon arrival, it was confirmed that one of the herders had been killed, while the second sustained gunshot wounds. The injured victim was promptly evacuated to Keana in neighbouring Nasarawa State for urgent medical attention. The remains of the deceased were handed over to community representatives for burial in accordance with local customs.
Suspect Arrested Over Cattle Rustling
In a related development on the same day, troops stationed at Ukpiam acted on credible intelligence from vigilant youths regarding suspected cattle rustling activities. Acting swiftly, troops arrested a 23-year-old suspect, Mr Terngu Aondohemba, who reportedly confessed to killing two cattle belonging to Fulani herders. He further implicated two accomplices identified as Mr Akpehe and Ashinge, who remain at large.
Subsequent investigations led troops to Korje Village in Daudu, where Mrs Mercy Onban, wife of the alleged buyer of the stolen meat, was apprehended. Recovered meat exhibits were secured as evidence. Both suspects are currently in custody pending further investigation.
Commander Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Criminality
The Force Commander, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, reiterated the resolve of the Task Force to halt the incessant killings of innocent persons and clamp down on cattle rustling within the Joint Operations Area.
He strongly condemned the violence and criminal acts, warning that perpetrators would be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice. The Commander further called on community leaders to intensify collaboration with security agencies, stressing that timely intelligence sharing remains vital to restoring lasting peace.
Law-abiding residents were reassured of the unwavering commitment of Operation WHIRL STROKE to safeguarding lives and property across Benue State and its environs.
