Painter Sikiru Oluwasegun has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for the rape of a 20-year-old woman. The incident, which occurred on July 19, 2021, at 3:45 am in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, led to Oluwasegun’s conviction after he was found guilty of having sexual intercourse with the survivor without her consent.

During the trial, the prosecution presented Oluwasegun’s confessional statement to the police as evidence, which the judge deemed sufficient to establish his guilt. In his statement, Oluwasegun admitted to entering the survivor’s room and raping her because he liked her, although he did not express his feelings to her as she was new to the compound.
The survivor, a student of the Lagos State Polytechnic, reported the incident to the student union the following day, leading to Oluwasegun’s arrest by the police.
Justice Oshodi emphasized the importance of Oluwasegun’s confession in determining his culpability, stating that it met the criteria set by the Supreme Court. He condemned the defendant’s actions and handed down the sentence of life imprisonment as prescribed by law.
The judgment serves as a reminder of the consequences of sexual violence and the commitment of the judiciary to ensure justice for survivors. It also underscores the need for society to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions and provide support to survivors of such heinous crimes.
