Former Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi was among the distinguished guests at the launch of acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s latest novel, Dream Count, held at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London over the weekend. The event, which attracted approximately 3,000 attendees, celebrated Adichie’s literary prowess and sparked discussions on Nigeria’s potential for development.
Obi, who shared his experience on social media, described the event as a testament to Nigeria’s immense potential when investments are made in education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. He also highlighted the importance of good governance in realizing the dream of a better Nigeria.
A Busy Schedule in the UK
Obi revealed that his trip to London was part of a busy schedule aimed at addressing Nigeria’s developmental challenges. “I arrived in London, United Kingdom safely on Sunday, the 2nd of March morning for a busy schedule,” he wrote. “I made the trip via Air Peace business class, as is my policy when embarking on long-haul flights, particularly when I have to start work immediately upon arrival.”
Upon arriving in the UK, Obi traveled to Cambridge for meetings with development experts. “Our discussions centered on suggested solutions to challenges confronting our nation,” he said. Later in the day, he returned to London to attend Adichie’s book launch.
Celebrating Literary Excellence
The launch of Dream Count, Adichie’s highly anticipated novel, was a star-studded event featuring a conversation between the author and journalist Elizabeth Day. Obi described the discussion as insightful and engaging, capturing the audience’s attention throughout the evening. “The event attracted about 3,000 attendees,” he noted, adding that it was a celebration of literary excellence and Nigeria’s cultural contributions to the global stage.
A Call for Investment in Human Development
Obi used the occasion to emphasize the importance of investing in education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation as critical measures of development, as reflected in the Human Development Index (HDI). “The event was not only a celebration of literary excellence but, more importantly, a testament to the immense potential that Nigeria holds if it invests in education, healthcare, and lifting people out of poverty,” he wrote.
He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, citing the energy and brilliance of the country’s youth as key drivers of progress. “Coupled with my earlier discussions on turning around our struggling nation and the exhilarating performance by @ChimamandaReal, I am convinced that with the energy and brilliance of our youth, a collective commitment, and guidance through good governance, the dream of a better Nigeria is within reach. I remain confident that all hope is not lost. A new Nigeria is POssible!” Obi declared.
