Peter Obi Denies Alleged Link to Abacha-Era ABN, Urges Public to Ignore Falsehood

June 12, 2025 – The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has vehemently denied allegations linking him to the Association for Better Nigeria (ABN), a group that opposed the actualization of the June 12, 1993, presidential mandate won by the late Chief MKO Abiola. In a statement released on Tuesday by his media office, Obi described the claims as fabricated falsehood aimed at tarnishing his reputation and diminishing his rising political profile.

The allegations, which resurfaced on social media under the title “Nigerians Must Not Forget!!! In 1993, Peter Obi was a protégé of Arthur Nzeribe in the Association for Better Nigeria, ABN,” were dismissed as baseless and malicious. The statement, signed by Ibrahim Umar, spokesman for the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), urged Nigerians to disregard the claims, emphasizing that Obi was never involved in the activities of the ABN or the June 12 struggle.

A History of False Allegations

Umar recalled that similar allegations first surfaced on June 14, 2023, in an article titled “Peter Obi and NADECO/Democracy Day.” He noted that the resurfacing of the false narrative is part of a coordinated effort by detractors to discredit Obi’s integrity and political standing. “No matter how widespread and fast a lie travels, when truth arrives, it appears like a distinguishing light,” Umar stated.

He further clarified that Obi was not a politician in 1993 and had no connection to the ABN or its activities. “As of 1993, Obi was not a politician. He admired and voted for Abiola through the late former Senate President Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, with whom he was a fan and admirer. Soon after the election, Obi relocated to the United Kingdom with his family, where he ran a successful business,” Umar explained.

Obi’s Stance on June 12 and Democracy

The statement highlighted Obi’s unwavering commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most outstanding democrats. “Obi’s belief in the rule of law and non-violence policy remains remarkable. His reputation for integrity and transparency in both business and politics is well-documented,” Umar said.

He also refuted claims that Obi worked in the Nigeria Ports Authority or held any government position before becoming governor of Anambra State. “The closest Obi came to General Sani Abacha’s government was when his petition on port congestion attracted Abacha’s attention, leading to his co-option into an advocacy committee for port decongestion that lasted less than four months,” Umar clarified.

A Legacy of Good Governance

The statement underscored Obi’s achievements as governor of Anambra State, where he left office with a reputation for transparency and good governance. “After eight years of outstanding governance, Obi cleared inherited pension and salary arrears of over ₦35 billion, left office without owing salaries or contractors, and left a savings of over $150 million and ₦30 billion in various Nigerian banks,” Umar noted.

Obi’s tenure as governor earned him the title of “Governor of the Decade,” and his commitment to public service continues to inspire many. “Since leaving office over 10 years ago, Obi has not taken a bottle of water from Anambra State, as he is not into after-office largesse,” Umar added.

Call to Reject Falsehood

The POMR urged the public to treat the allegations as a malicious effort to discredit Obi’s character and achievements. “We urge members of the reading public to treat this as a malicious effort that should be sent to the trash. Obi was never directly or indirectly involved in the activities of the June 12 struggle,” Umar stated.

The statement concluded by reaffirming Obi’s dedication to Nigeria’s development and his belief in the power of truth and integrity. “Peter Obi’s reputation and achievements speak for themselves. No amount of falsehood can diminish his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and development,” Umar said.

As Nigeria commemorates June 12, a day symbolizing the struggle for democracy, Obi’s media office reiterated his commitment to upholding the values of justice, transparency, and good governance that the day represents.
