Police Arrest 17 Suspects Over Planned Violent Protest in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has arrested 17 suspects in connection with a planned violent protest aimed at disrupting peace and causing a breakdown of law and order in the state. The arrest followed credible intelligence reports about the planned protest, prompting the police to deploy personnel to strategic locations to prevent the unrest.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Kano State Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday. He warned against any form of violent protest, emphasizing the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state.

Proactive Measures by the Police

According to SP Haruna, the police acted swiftly upon receiving intelligence about the planned protest. “Following credible intelligence reports of a planned violent protest by some individuals, the Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has deployed personnel and assets to strategic locations within Kano Metropolis to prevent the protest and ensure public safety,” he said.

He added that the 17 suspects were apprehended as part of the command’s proactive measures to forestall the planned violence. “As a result of these proactive measures, 17 suspected thugs have been arrested, and investigation is ongoing. The Command is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators of this planned violence are brought to justice,” Haruna stated.

SP Haruna issued a stern warning to individuals and groups against engaging in any form of unlawful gathering, procession, or violence. Heavy Security Presence in Kano

Our correspondent observed a heavy security presence in some parts of Kano, particularly around the Gidan Nassarawa palace, where the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, currently resides. The increased security measures are believed to be connected to the planned protest and efforts to prevent any disruption of peace in the area.

It was alleged that the planned protest was aimed at scuttling the Emir’s plans to organize a Ramadan Tafsir (Quranic interpretation session) in the area. The police, however, did not confirm this allegation but reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
