POLICE WARN PROTEST GROUPS TO RESPECT COURT ORDER

Abuja, Nigeria – 8:30 AM, October 20, 2025

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning to protest groups and the general public to strictly adhere to a subsisting court order restricting demonstrations in key areas of the Federal Capital Territory.

This comes in response to a ruling by the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, delivered on October 17, 2025, by Justice M.G. Umar in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025 – FRN v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 Others. The court order restrains the respondents and their affiliates from staging any form of protest within and around Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.
In a statement issued early Monday morning, police authorities reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding public order, while recognizing the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly.

“While the right to peaceful protest is constitutionally guaranteed, it must be exercised within the limits of the law and with due regard for public safety and national security,” the statement read.
The warning comes amid heightened tensions surrounding renewed calls for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), with both supporters and counter-groups planning demonstrations in Abuja.
The Police urged all groups—regardless of their position on the issue—to respect the court’s decision and avoid restricted zones. It also emphasized the need for protesters to conduct themselves peacefully, warning that any form of violence, use of weapons, destruction of property, or disruption of public order will attract immediate legal consequences.

“Digital evidence from social media platforms will be utilized in identifying and prosecuting violators,” the statement warned.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reportedly directed the FCT Commissioner of Police and other strategic commands to implement proactive measures to enforce the court order. This includes increased security presence and strategic deployments in sensitive areas of the capital.
While assuring residents of their safety and the continuity of lawful activities, the Police urged Abuja residents to remain calm and go about their daily routines without fear.
“Anyone who defies the court order or engages in unlawful assembly will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly,” the statement concluded.

The Police reaffirmed their readiness to protect democratic freedoms while maintaining law and order in the nation’s capital.
