President Tinubu Commends Supreme Court’s Decision on Local Government Autonomy
Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has commended the Supreme Court’s recent ruling affirming the financial autonomy of local governments, a decision that upholds the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria regarding the legal rights of local councils.

President Tinubu expressed his appreciation for the court’s decision, highlighting that ineffective local government administration has been a significant barrier to the nation’s progress. He emphasized the importance of governance at the grassroots level in ensuring that all Nigerians receive necessary services.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about the people of this country, at all levels, irrespective of faith, tribe, gender, political affiliation, or any other artificial line they say exists between us,” said President Tinubu. “This country belongs to all of us. By virtue of this judgement, our people – especially the poor – will be able to hold their local leaders to account for their actions and inactions. What is sent to local government accounts will be known, and services must now be provided without excuses.”
President Tinubu noted that his administration had initiated the lawsuit due to a firm belief in providing relief to the Nigerian people. He asserted that the judgment ensures only elected local officials will control local resources, fostering accountability and transparency at the grassroots level.
“This judgment stands as a resounding affirmation that we can use legitimate means of redress to restructure our country and restructure our economy to make Nigeria a better place to live in and a fairer society for all of our people,” he added.
The President’s remarks underscore his administration’s commitment to empowering local governments and enhancing service delivery to citizens across the nation.
