PRESIDENT TINUBU, GERMAN CHANCELLOR MERZ TO COLLABORATE ON SECURITY, POWER
Abuja, Nigeria, February 20, 2026
President and German Chancellor have resolved to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Germany, with a renewed commitment to collaboration in the areas of security, power, railway development, creative arts, and skills acquisition.
The agreement was reached during a telephone conversation on Wednesday afternoon, where both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to deepening cooperation between their countries, which have enjoyed diplomatic relations for 65 years.
Central to their discussion was Nigeria’s Presidential Power Initiative aimed at overhauling the country’s electricity infrastructure. President Tinubu noted that Nigeria would require technical assistance, particularly in power transmission, to achieve lasting reforms in the sector.
In response, Chancellor Merz pledged that would be ready to provide the necessary technical support, while would be willing to finance the project. The collaboration is expected to boost Nigeria’s transmission capacity and improve power supply nationwide.
Beyond energy, both leaders expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel region. President Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for intelligence and reconnaissance support to stabilize the corridor.
“The Sahel corridor is bad and needs our support. Intelligence support reconnaissance is needed,” the Nigerian leader said, calling for the provision of used helicopters to enhance surveillance and counterterrorism efforts in the region.
The two leaders also discussed railway modernization and broader infrastructure development, recognizing their importance to economic growth and regional integration.
In addition, President Tinubu and Chancellor Merz expressed willingness to collaborate in the creative arts and skill development sectors. The German leader highlighted the importance of cultural exchange and advocated for the establishment of the Great Museum of African Arts to promote Africa’s rich cultural heritage globally.
Chancellor Merz further stated that Germany looks forward to welcoming Nigeria’s new ambassador, underscoring Berlin’s commitment to reinforcing diplomatic and economic ties.
The renewed engagement signals a significant step toward expanding Nigeria-Germany cooperation, with both nations poised to explore strategic partnerships that address security challenges, energy reform, infrastructure development, and cultural advancement.
