President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Chief Oludolapo Ibukun Akinkugbe, a pioneering Nigerian pharmacist, educationist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Chief Akinkugbe, co-founder of the iconic Spectrum Books, passed away at the age of 96.
In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Chief Akinkugbe as “a man of uncommon vision and industry whose contributions spanned critical sectors such as healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy.”
The President lauded Chief Akinkugbe’s enduring legacy, stating that “Nigeria has lost a giant, but his life’s work will continue to speak for him across generations.”
A respected trailblazer, Chief Akinkugbe was among the earliest Nigerian pharmacists, whose career helped shape the nation’s healthcare standards. His co-founding of Spectrum Books not only advanced publishing in Nigeria but also expanded literacy and access to quality education across Africa.
“Chief Akinkugbe belonged to a remarkable generation of Nigerians whose intellect, integrity, and innovation helped shape modern Nigeria’s foundation,” President Tinubu said.
The President further highlighted Chief Akinkugbe’s philanthropic spirit and humility, noting that “he lived with grace, served with humility, and generously gave his wisdom and resources to advance society.” He emphasized that Akinkugbe’s imprint on Nigeria’s socio-economic development remains “indelible.”
In his tribute, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences—on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria—to the Akinkugbe family, the Nigerian pharmaceutical community, the education and publishing sectors, and all who benefitted from Chief Akinkugbe’s impactful legacy.
Chief Akinkugbe was the founder of Palm Chemists, initially located in Lagos before its relocation to Ibadan. He also played a pioneering role in challenging and eventually helping dismantle colonial-era monopolies in Nigeria’s corporate landscape. Through his expertise and leadership, he helped foster a generation of indigenous business excellence.
President Tinubu concluded his tribute with prayers for the peaceful repose of Chief Akinkugbe’s soul.
