Rivers Sole Administrator Confirms Release of Withheld Allocations, Vows Accountability in Salary Payments

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has confirmed the release of withheld local government allocations, pledging to address delays in salary payments and enforce financial accountability across the state’s local government areas. Ibas made the announcement during a meeting with Heads of Local Government Administrators in Port Harcourt, describing the gathering as a critical step toward restoring stability and progress in Rivers State.
Ibas, a retired vice admiral and former Chief of Naval Staff, expressed deep concern over the economic challenges facing the Niger Delta region, despite its abundant natural resources. “This is unacceptable,” he stated, emphasizing the urgent need for transformation and accountability in governance. He acknowledged the hardships faced by workers due to delayed salary payments, assuring them that the withheld allocations had been released and that his administration would ensure prompt payment of outstanding salaries.
“I feel the pain of the workers,” Ibas said, addressing the struggles of local government employees. However, he warned that his administration would not tolerate financial mismanagement, vowing to enforce strict accountability in the handling of public funds. He directed all local government areas to submit their wage bills, supported by relevant documentation, through the office of the Head of Service. “We will scrutinize the handling of public funds and take action against any mismanagement,” he declared.
Ibas reiterated his commitment to good governance, stating that it is not merely a slogan but a promise to change the negative narrative within the next six months. He also stressed the importance of collaboration with traditional rulers and security agencies to enhance grassroots security. “You must take the lead in ensuring security within your domains,” he urged local government administrators.
In response, Clifford Paul, President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, commended the Federal Government for appointing Ibas as Sole Administrator, citing his competence and leadership qualities. Paul acknowledged the developmental strides made in Rivers State despite ongoing political conflicts and pledged the union’s support for peace and stability. He also urged Ibas to prioritize workers’ welfare, noting that local government employees are currently owed two months’ salaries.
Paul expressed optimism that the release of the withheld allocations would pave the way for resolving salary arrears and rebuilding trust among stakeholders. “This is an opportunity to foster unity and rebuild trust in the state,” he said, calling on all parties to work together for the common good.
The announcement marks a significant step in addressing the financial challenges facing Rivers State’s local government areas, with Ibas’s administration emphasizing accountability, transparency, and collaboration as key pillars of its governance strategy.
