Quick question, if a multi-billionaire walks up to you and tells you that he/she is willing to give you an equivalent of your worth in dollars, how much will you charge?
Now don’t be quick to answer.
In fact, don’t answer at all because most of you will start calling ridiculous amounts when in the real sense of it, you don’t value yourself more than a couple of hundred dollars, thousands at most.
How do I know this?
I’ll ask another set of questions.
How many of you think you deserve to be in the white house, not working as a cleaner but at the dining table with Biden as a special guest of honor?
Or fit enough to be the wife of the crown prince of the United Kingdom?
Or special adviser to Elon Musk?
See how few the numbers are.
But you estimated your value to equal that of the earth a few moments ago.
Now, why don’t you see yourself in all those positions I listed above or aren’t they occupied by humans like yourself?
It is because of one simple word and quality of man:
SELF WORTH.
According to the Oxford dictionary, self-worth is simply confidence in one’s worth or abilities; self-respect.
Now from this definition, we can see why most of us don’t see ourselves in those positions I mentioned earlier; we lack confidence in our abilities.
No reasonable human being would volunteer to sing at a social gathering if he/she is a terrible singer because they don’t trust their singing ability well enough to show it to the world.
So why will you place such a ridiculous amount of money on yourself if you don’t trust the abilities that make you as valuable as you seem?
For you to value yourself, you must trust in your abilities and their capacity to prove your worth, and to trust in your abilities, you must develop them to a satisfactory level.
Back to the singer, he/she could not volunteer to sing because they didn’t believe their voice was developed well enough to satisfy the public’s needs and so withheld themselves.
So, therefore, if you want to be as valuable as you profess, and bold enough to prove your worth, you must develop your skills one after the other and add more to further improve your confidence and value as a human.
I see myself as a competent writer and that is why I write to you every day but I don’t see myself as worth as much as I wish so I strive to improve myself daily so that I can serve you better and see myself as the good writer I am.
As I said earlier, you can’t be worth as much as you think you should if you don’t believe in your abilities and you can’t believe in your abilities if they’re not well developed.
So starting today, make it a resolve to build on your abilities daily and be consistent with them.
With time, you’ll see yourself grow from where you are now to a step closer to where you want to be.
