Serious Assault on Police Officers: Suspects Arrested as CP Fayoade Orders Immediate Trial of Arresting Officers for Unprofessional Conduct

Lagos, Nigeria — The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Adegoke Fayoade, mni, has ordered the immediate commencement of an orderly room trial for the police officers involved in a viral video showing them assaulting a suspect who was resisting arrest.

On July 2, 2024, officers from the Alausa Division of the Lagos State Police Command mobilized to Makinde Odewale Street, Oregun, following numerous complaints about the rampant abuse of hard drugs in the area. The officers faced stiff resistance, resulting in serious injury to one police inspector who was stabbed in the head with a broken bottle. Additionally, the Olu of Alausa and the CDA Chairman were also assaulted. The injured inspector is currently hospitalized.

Despite the initial resistance, a reinforcement team managed to arrest several suspects with substances suspected to be illicit drugs. However, the reinforcement team, in their bid to ensure the arrest of the mastermind behind the attack on the police officer, resorted to unprofessional, unethical, and uncouth methods, which were captured on video.

CP Fayoade condemned the actions of the police officers, stating that their behavior is not in line with the values and professional ethics of the Nigeria Police. He also condemned the actions of the youths in attacking the police officers and warned that anyone found culpable in this regard would be dealt with according to the law.

“The Lagos State Police Command assures Lagosians that the Command will not relent in delivering on its mandates of maintaining law and order, preventing and detecting crime, and apprehending and prosecuting criminals,” stated CP Fayoade.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of upholding professional standards and ensuring that law enforcement officers conduct themselves in a manner befitting their roles, even in challenging situations.
