Terrorists Kill 13, Burn 7 Villages in Fresh Kebbi Attack

In a brutal reprisal attack, suspected terrorists on Sunday stormed Birnin Dede village in Kebbi State, killing 13 people and setting seven villages ablaze. The assault, which targeted communities in Arewa Local Government Area, is believed to be retaliation for the recent killing of their leader, Maigemu, by a combined force of security operatives in the state.

According to Malam Umar, a local resident, the attackers specifically targeted villages near Birnin Dede, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. “The terrorists burned down several villages, sparing only one that was protected by soldiers. We seek protection from Allah against this dreaded group,” Umar said in a telephone interview.

The attack follows a recent security operation led by the Kebbi State Government, which resulted in the elimination of Maigemu, a notorious terrorist kingpin. Governor Nasir Idris had backed the operation as part of ongoing efforts to curb violent activities and restore peace in the state. However, the latest attack underscores the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups in the region.

Efforts to obtain further details from the Kebbi State Police Command were unsuccessful, as its spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, did not respond to calls or text messages.

The destruction of seven villages and the loss of 13 lives highlight the escalating violence in Kebbi State and the challenges faced by security forces in containing terrorist activities. The attack has left residents in fear, with many calling for increased military presence and protection in vulnerable communities.

Governor Nasir Idris has yet to issue a statement regarding the latest attack, but the incident is likely to prompt renewed calls for enhanced security measures and collaboration between federal and state authorities to address the growing insecurity in the region.

The Kebbi State Government’s efforts to combat terrorism have been met with mixed results, as the elimination of key terrorist leaders often leads to reprisal attacks. The situation underscores the need for a comprehensive strategy that not only targets terrorist networks but also addresses the root causes of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, and lack of infrastructure.

As the state grapples with this latest wave of violence, residents are left to mourn the loss of loved ones and rebuild their lives amidst the ashes of their communities. The attack serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s northwestern region and the urgent need for sustained efforts to restore peace and stability.
