TROOPS INTENSIFY HARVEST-SEASON PROTECTION AS TWO CRIMINAL HERDERS ARRESTED IN MAKURDI FARMLAND PATROL

Makurdi, Benue State | 25 November 2025

In a sustained effort to safeguard farmers and ensure food security during the peak of the harvest season, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) have arrested two herders for allegedly trespassing and destroying crops on community farmlands in Makurdi, Benue State.

The incident occurred on 20 November 2025, when OPWS personnel deployed at Zongo Akiki were carrying out a routine farm-protection patrol. During the operation, the vigilant troops intercepted the two suspects after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands belonging to local residents, resulting in significant damage to crops.
Their swift response not only prevented further destruction but also helped avert a potential clash between the herders and the affected farmers. The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, with appropriate legal actions expected to follow.

The Force Commander, Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and timely intervention. He urged members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands when confronted with disputes, noting that violence or reprisals only escalate tensions and threaten peaceful coexistence.
Major General Gara further appealed to herders to remain law-abiding and desist from any form of criminal behaviour that undermines security and order. He reaffirmed OPWS’s unwavering commitment to protecting farmlands, supporting farmers, and sustaining a secure environment where legitimate economic activities can flourish.
