UNIBEN, NELFUND Disown Fake Student Loan Repayment Circular

Benin City, Edo State | January 26, 2026

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) have disowned a circular currently in circulation that purportedly outlines guidelines for the repayment of loans obtained under the federal student loan scheme.
In separate statements issued on Monday, both institutions described the document as fake, misleading, and not emanating from any authorized office. They warned students, parents, and members of the public to disregard the circular in its entirety.

According to UNIBEN, the university has not released any official communication regarding loan repayment procedures and does not act independently in matters concerning the administration or recovery of student loans under the national scheme. The institution cautioned that relying on unverified information could mislead beneficiaries and create unnecessary panic.
Similarly, NELFUND stated that the alleged repayment guidelines did not originate from the fund and do not reflect its policies or operational framework. The agency emphasized that all authentic information concerning the student loan scheme, including repayment terms and timelines, would be communicated through its official channels.

Both UNIBEN and NELFUND urged the public to always verify information from credible sources and to report any suspicious or unauthorized documents to the appropriate authorities.
They further reassured student loan beneficiaries that clear and accurate repayment guidelines would be formally announced when finalized.
