University of Abuja (Yakubu Gowon University) Expels 28 Students, Withdraws Certificates of 15 Former Students

The Senate of the , now known as Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the expulsion of 28 students and the withdrawal of certificates from 15 former students over various disciplinary offences.
According to a statement issued by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of the Information Directorate of the University, the decision was reached during the institution’s 191st Regular Meeting of the Senate. The action followed a detailed consideration of the report and recommendations submitted by the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).
The statement outlined a range of offences for which the affected students were found culpable. These include threat to life and assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cult-related activities, possession and use of hard drugs, falsification of ‘O’ Level results, as well as failure to appear before the disciplinary committee despite repeated invitations.
In addition to the expulsions, the Senate approved the withdrawal of certificates of 15 former students who reportedly failed to honour invitations by the Committee after several notices. The University maintained that due process was followed in all cases reviewed by the SDC before recommendations were presented to the Senate for final approval.
However, not all students investigated were found guilty. Nine students were exonerated after thorough investigations cleared them of wrongdoing. Meanwhile, 33 other students received warnings for various infractions, including conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and fighting.
The Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, , reaffirmed the University’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment. He emphasized that the institution would continue to uphold discipline and enforce its rules and regulations without compromise.
The University reiterated that its disciplinary measures are aimed at preserving academic integrity, ensuring campus safety, and protecting the reputation of the institution as it continues to position itself as a leading center of learning in Nigeria.
