US CONDOLES WITH NIGERIA OVER IMAM’S DEATH

The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed deep condolences to the family and loved ones of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the renowned Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, who passed away on January 15, 2026, at the age of 90.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Mission described Imam Abubakar as a courageous champion of religious tolerance and interfaith dialogue, noting his distinguished record of building bridges across religious communities throughout his lifetime.
The statement recalled that in recognition of his extraordinary bravery and unwavering commitment to religious freedom, the United States Department of State honored Imam Abubakar with the International Religious Freedom Award in 2019.
According to the Mission, the late Imam’s selfless actions exemplified the highest ideals of humanity, interfaith harmony, and peaceful coexistence, particularly in times of tension and conflict.
“The legacy of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar—marked by compassion, acceptance, and unity—will continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike,” the statement said.
The U.S. Mission extended its sympathies to the people of Plateau State and all those whose lives were touched by the Imam’s lifelong dedication to peace and mutual understanding.
