VP Shettima Leads Nigeria’s Delegation to 80th UN General Assembly in New York

New York, United States – September 22, 2025

Vice President Kashim Shettima is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which officially commenced on Monday, September 22, and will run through Sunday, September 28, 2025, in New York City, United States.

According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the high-level sessions and deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate on Wednesday, September 24, between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. (New York time).
The Vice President is also scheduled to participate in a High-Level Climate Ambition Summit hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the same day, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., where Nigeria is expected to unveil its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement framework.
In addition, Vice President Shettima will take part in the High-Level Roundtable on Adequate and Affordable Housing, an event hosted by the President of Kenya, and engage in a series of bilateral meetings with global leaders and international development partners.


The 80th UNGA marks a significant milestone, commemorating 80 years since the founding of the United Nations. This year’s assembly focuses on global cooperation in addressing pressing challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, global health, and peacebuilding.

Following his engagements in New York, Vice President Shettima is expected to travel to Frankfurt, Germany, for a meeting with senior officials of Deutsche Bank, before returning to Nigeria.
