Wike: Fubara’s Impeachment Was Dropped on Condition He Won’t Seek Re-election
ABUJA, NIGERIA – MAY 26, 2026
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he was not surprised by the decision of Siminalayi Fubara to withdraw from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Rivers State.
Fubara had announced his withdrawal from the race a day before the primary election, explaining that his decision was based on “conviction and sacrifice for the state to move forward in peace and unity.”
Reacting to the development during a media interaction in Abuja, Wike alleged that the political agreement reached during the resolution of the crisis in Rivers State included a condition that Fubara would not seek re-election in 2027.
According to the FCT minister, the withdrawal from the APC primary was in line with the understanding reached among political stakeholders to restore stability in the state after months of political tension.
Wike maintained that the impeachment moves against the Rivers governor were suspended following interventions and negotiations aimed at preserving peace and governance in the oil-rich state.
The former Rivers governor also noted that political leaders and stakeholders had made sacrifices to prevent the prolonged crisis from escalating, stressing that adherence to agreements was necessary for lasting reconciliation.
Fubara’s decision to step down from the contest has continued to generate reactions within the political landscape of Rivers State, with analysts describing it as a major development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The political rift between Wike and Fubara had dominated Rivers State politics for months, leading to divisions within the state assembly and tensions among supporters of both leaders.
