World Bank Country Director Inaugurates Schools, Flyover, and Dualised Roads in Borno
Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, March 2, 2026
The Country Director, Dr. Mathew Varghis, has officially inaugurated three newly constructed schools, a modern flyover, and three expanded dualised township roads in Borno State.
The landmark ceremony, held in Maiduguri, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing development partnership between the World Bank and the Borno State Government. The projects are aimed at enhancing access to quality education, improving transportation infrastructure, and stimulating economic growth across the state.
Speaking during the inauguration, Dr. Varghis reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting sustainable development initiatives that directly improve the lives of citizens. He noted that the newly built schools would provide safe and conducive learning environments for hundreds of students, while the flyover and expanded road networks would ease traffic congestion, boost commerce, and improve connectivity within key areas of the state capital.
The three dualised township roads are expected to significantly reduce travel time, enhance road safety, and open up surrounding communities for business and residential growth. The flyover, strategically constructed to decongest one of Maiduguri’s busiest intersections, represents a major leap in urban infrastructure development.
Officials of the Borno State Government expressed appreciation for the continued support from the World Bank, describing the partnership as instrumental in rebuilding and transforming critical sectors, particularly in a state recovering from years of security challenges.
The inauguration ceremony forms part of the World Bank team’s official engagement visit to Borno State, underscoring its deepening collaboration with the state government. The visit also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to review ongoing projects and explore new areas of cooperation focused on education, infrastructure, and community resilience.
Residents who attended the ceremony lauded the projects, describing them as timely interventions that will positively impact socio-economic activities and improve overall quality of life in the state.
With these developments, Borno State continues to witness renewed momentum in infrastructure expansion and public service delivery, reinforcing confidence in strategic partnerships aimed at sustainable growth and long-term stability.
