Yahaya Bello Allegedly Escapes EFCC Capture with Governor Ododo’s Help Amid N80.2 Billion Fraud Investigation
Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello reportedly evaded capture by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, with the alleged assistance of his successor, Governor Usman Ododo. The EFCC had surrounded the Kogi State Government Lodge in Abuja in a renewed attempt to arrest Bello over allegations of an N80.2 billion fraud.

According to a source, the arrest attempt was thwarted when Governor Ododo intervened, using his immunity as a sitting governor to prevent the EFCC operatives from completing their task. “Yahaya Bello has not been arrested. The Kogi State governor prevented operatives from doing their work yesterday just like he did the other time. He took him away, and our men could not do anything because of the immunity he (Ododo) is enjoying,” the source revealed to The Punch.
This is not the first time Governor Ododo has allegedly played a role in preventing Bello’s arrest. In a similar incident earlier in April 2024, security details attached to the incumbent governor reportedly aided Bello in resisting the EFCC’s efforts. The EFCC has been investigating Bello for his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of public funds during his tenure as governor.
The situation has sparked concerns about the use of state resources to shield public officials from facing legal scrutiny. The EFCC’s investigation continues as Nigerians closely watch the unfolding events, which could have significant implications for the country’s approach to corruption and the rule of law.
Further updates are expected as the EFCC escalates its efforts to bring the former governor in for questioning.
