NSCDC BEGINS DISCIPLINARY PROBE INTO DEATHS OF 37 SUSPECTED ILLEGAL MINERS

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has commenced an investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the Corps’ custody in Niger State.

As part of the investigation, the NSCDC has paraded its suspended Niger State Commandant, Commandant Suberu Aniviye, alongside 23 other personnel, bringing the total number of personnel under investigation to 24.

The Corps says the investigation is aimed at determining the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including how the suspects were treated, the level of supervision provided by officers and whether established procedures were followed while they were in custody.

Speaking at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Sauka, Abuja, the Corps’ National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commandant Babawale Afolabi, said the investigation would be thorough and impartial. He stressed that the Corps would leave no stone unturned in determining what happened.

According to the NSCDC, any personnel found to have contributed to the deaths or violated professional standards will face internal disciplinary action and, where applicable, prosecution under the law.

The Corps also said the investigation reflects its commitment to transparency, accountability, human rights and professional conduct. Its findings will determine what further administrative and legal measures should be taken against those found responsible.
