PRESIDENT TINUBU MANDATES VICE PRESIDENT SHETTIMA TO LEAD NIGERIA’S DELEGATION TO 81ST UNGA

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States.

The high-level delegation includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers and other senior government officials.  

The UNGA General Debate is scheduled for September 22–28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”  

At the General Debate, Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement, outlining the country’s positions and priorities on national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.

He will also participate in high-level meetings and bilateral engagements focusing on issues including the right to development, climate action, sustainable development, climate finance and reform of the global financial architecture.  

The State House confirmed that President Tinubu, who extended his working vacation by a few days, will return to Nigeria at the weekend. It added that Shettima will present Nigeria’s national statement at the UNGA.  

Shettima has since arrived in New York, stating that Nigeria’s engagements at the global gathering will be guided by the country’s national interest and commitment to multilateralism.
