ANAMBRA POLICE ARRAIGNS SIX OVER DEFILEMENT, RAPE AND CHILD ABUSE

The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned six suspects before the Gender-Based Violence Court sitting in Awka over separate allegations involving child defilement, sexual assault, child abuse, physical assault and alleged unlawful procurement of abortion involving minors. The suspects were arraigned on September 23, 2026, following investigations into the respective cases.  

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, one of the suspects, Chinedu Chiekwu, was arraigned over the alleged defilement of an 11-year-old child on September 6. Another suspect, Sunday Anele, faces an allegation involving sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, which the police said allegedly resulted in pregnancy.  

The command also arraigned Ugochukwu Okereke over an allegation that he lured a 13-year-old girl to a nearby bush where he allegedly sexually assaulted her. Ebuka Nwachukwu was similarly arraigned over an allegation of sexually abusing a six-year-old child after allegedly luring her into his room in Okpoko.  

The remaining two suspects are facing different allegations. Ogechi Ofoma was arraigned over an allegation that she used a heated kitchen knife to inflict multiple injuries on her five-year-old daughter, while Obianuju Okafor was arraigned over an allegation relating to the unlawful procurement of an abortion for her 15-year-old daughter.  

The Police also provided an update on a separate case involving a 36-year-old woman who was allegedly seen in a widely circulated video engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct involving her child. The command said the case had been investigated and the case file forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for necessary legal action. The suspect remains in police custody pending further proceedings.  

Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons from sexual abuse, exploitation, violence and other forms of harm.

He also assured that victims and survivors would be treated with dignity, sensitivity and appropriate protection throughout the investigative and legal processes.  

The cases remain allegations before the court, and the arraignment of the suspects does not by itself establish their guilt.
