NIGERIA AND TURKEY DEEPEN MARITIME COLLABORATION

Nigeria and Türkiye are strengthening cooperation in the maritime sector, with emphasis on shipbuilding, defence technology, technology transfer, local production and human-capacity development.

The renewed partnership was highlighted during a high-level engagement between the Nigerian Navy and Turkish defence-industry officials in Abuja. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in naval shipbuilding and supporting Nigeria’s efforts to modernise its fleet while developing stronger indigenous maritime capabilities.  

Both sides are also exploring opportunities for joint production, research and development, maintenance support and technical training. For Nigeria, such cooperation is expected to improve local expertise and reduce dependence on foreign support for the maintenance and development of naval platforms.

The partnership builds on broader defence cooperation agreed earlier in 2026, when Nigeria and Türkiye discussed specialised naval training, the evaluation of suitable naval platforms and measures to improve maritime-domain awareness and operational effectiveness.  

The relationship also has an economic dimension. In August 2026, the Nigeria–Türkiye Shipbuilding and Maritime Showcase and Forum produced four memoranda of understanding covering maritime and shipbuilding cooperation, investment promotion, digital business connections, as well as maritime education and research.  

Nigeria has previously acquired Turkish-built offshore patrol vessels, including two 76.9-metre vessels launched at a Turkish shipyard in 2024 as part of efforts to strengthen fleet renewal and maritime security.  

The expanding collaboration is therefore expected to contribute to maritime security, indigenous shipbuilding, skills development, technology transfer and the wider growth of Nigeria’s blue economy, while creating opportunities for Turkish investment and partnerships in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
