DSS SECURES DEATH PENALTY ON SUSPECT

The Department of State Services (DSS) has secured a death sentence against Ibrahim Usman, popularly known as Dan Iyali, following his conviction over his involvement in the kidnapping and killing of three people in Sokoto State.

Usman was convicted by the High Court of Justice of Sokoto State, sitting in the Sokoto Judicial Division, after facing a four-count charge alongside other suspects who are still at large. The charges included criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, culpable homicide punishable by death, and voluntarily causing grievous hurt without provocation.

The case stemmed from an incident in September 2023, when three persons were allegedly kidnapped and subsequently killed in Sokoto State. Following investigations and prosecution, the court found Usman guilty and imposed the death penalty.

The conviction represents another prosecution involving the DSS and serious violent crimes, particularly kidnapping and homicide. The Service has in recent months secured several major convictions in cases involving terrorism, arms trafficking and kidnapping, including death sentences handed down by courts in Sokoto, Kogi and Katsina states.  

The latest judgment underscores the continued use of judicial proceedings to prosecute individuals accused of serious criminal offences, while the convicted person’s legal rights, including any applicable appeal process, remain subject to the law.
