SENATE RECONVENES PLENARY AFTER RECESS

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, reconvened plenary after an extended annual recess, returning to legislative business after lawmakers had been away from the chamber for several weeks. The resumption had earlier been shifted from September 15 to September 29 to allow for the completion of rehabilitation work in the National Assembly chambers.  

At the resumed sitting, the Senate considered several important matters, including the extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act from September 30 to December 31, 2026. The extension was approved to allow Ministries, Departments and Agencies to complete ongoing capital projects and utilise appropriated funds.

The chamber also received and referred President Bola Tinubu’s requests for the confirmation of nominees to key federal institutions, including the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, the Federal Civil Service Commission and a non-career ambassadorial position. The nominations were referred to relevant Senate committees for screening and further consideration.  

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while welcoming lawmakers back, highlighted security challenges, flooding and the need for the legislature to continue addressing issues affecting Nigerians. He also urged senators to maintain their legislative responsibilities and conduct themselves with dignity as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.  

However, the return to plenary was brief, as the Senate subsequently adjourned sitting until October 13, 2026, with a security summit scheduled for October 12–13.
