SULTAN URGES POLITICIANS TO PRIORITISE PEACE & UNITY AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on politicians and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly ahead of the 2027 general elections.  

The Sultan made the appeal when he received the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, respectively, at his palace in Sokoto.

He urged political actors to avoid abusive language, personal insults, inflammatory statements and other forms of rhetoric capable of heightening tensions or triggering violence during the electioneering period.

While acknowledging the constitutional right of politicians to present their manifestos, policies and programmes to Nigerians, the Sultan stressed that political campaigns should be conducted with respect for the law and for people holding different political views.

He further urged political leaders to place Nigeria’s peace, unity and national interests above partisan differences, noting that political positions are temporary while the stability and unity of the country remain essential to its development.  

The Sultan also called on candidates to lead by example and ensure that their supporters maintain peaceful conduct throughout the electoral process. His latest appeal comes amid increased political mobilisation and consultations ahead of the 2027 elections, following the signing of a National Peace Accord by political actors in August.
