FG CONDEMNS KILLING OF FARMERS IN BORNO

The Federal Government has condemned the killing of 15 farmers in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State by suspected terrorists, describing the incident as a disturbing development that poses a serious threat to farming communities and food production in the country.

The condemnation was contained in a statement issued by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, who described the attack on the farmers as disturbing and uncalled for.
The Minister expressed concern over the growing security challenges confronting farming communities, noting that attacks of this nature undermine ongoing efforts to encourage farmers to remain productive and contribute to Nigeria’s food security.
According to the Minister, farmers need a safe and secure environment to cultivate their farms, particularly as the Federal Government continues to pursue measures aimed at increasing agricultural production and reducing food insecurity across the country.
Kyari therefore called on security agencies to intensify operations in Marte and other affected communities in order to prevent further attacks on farmers and residents. He also urged the relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible for the killings are identified and brought to justice.
The Minister further appealed for intensified efforts to locate the three farmers who remain missing following the attack, expressing concern for their safety and the wellbeing of their families.
The incident has renewed concerns over the security of farmers in parts of Borno State, where insecurity has continued to affect agricultural activities and the livelihoods of rural communities.
Kyari stressed that the protection of farmers must remain a priority, noting that securing farming communities is directly linked to protecting Nigeria’s food supply. He maintained that farmers cannot effectively contribute to the nation’s agricultural development when they are exposed to attacks while carrying out their activities.
The Federal Government’s position underscores the importance of strengthening security around farming communities, particularly in areas affected by terrorism and other forms of insecurity, to enable farmers to return to their farms and sustain food production.
