The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 20 people in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Hawan Kibo–Jos route in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The crash occurred at about 3:32 p.m. on Friday, October 2, shortly after Sopp Water Falls. According to the FRSC, 25 people were involved in the accident, with five others sustaining injuries. The deceased were all male, while the injured comprised three males and two females.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash, including a Howo Sino truck, a Toyota Corolla, a Toyota Bummer bus operated by Yankari Express and a motorcycle. Preliminary findings indicated that brake failure and subsequent loss of control were likely responsible for the collision.

The injured victims were evacuated to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital, while the bodies of those who died were deposited at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) mortuary.

FRSC rescue personnel subsequently cleared the obstruction caused by the crash and restored traffic along the affected section of the highway. The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, directed the crash investigation team to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, particularly the reported brake failure.

The FRSC also urged motorists, especially commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, to prioritise vehicle roadworthiness, regular maintenance, speed management and responsible driving to prevent similar tragedies.

Update: A later assessment reported that the death toll had risen to 21, so the initially confirmed figure of 20 may have subsequently changed.
