The Federal Government’s independent investigative committee probing the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State has requested an additional two weeks to complete its assignment and submit its report.

The committee, chaired by retired DSS Deputy Director-General Jonathan Kure, said it had made appreciable progress but required more time to conclude key aspects of the investigation, including the examination of forensic and pathology reports.
The panel was inaugurated by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the deaths, which occurred while the victims were in NSCDC custody in Niger State.

Its mandate includes establishing the identities of the deceased, examining the circumstances surrounding their arrest and detention, determining the cause and manner of death, and identifying any possible negligence, misconduct or complicity. It is also expected to recommend appropriate action, compensation where applicable, and measures to prevent a recurrence.
The committee has already commenced its investigation, including medical examinations, interviews and visits to relevant locations. The government had earlier suspended the Niger State NSCDC Commandant and 20 other officers pending the outcome of the probe.
The requested extension is expected to allow the investigators to complete outstanding forensic work and present a comprehensive report on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
