Senate President Godswill Akpabio is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, Tanzania, taking place from October 5 to 9, 2026.

The assembly brings together parliamentarians from around the world under the theme, “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.” Discussions are focused on strengthening parliamentary cooperation, democracy, human rights, inclusive development and effective governance.

Akpabio’s participation provides Nigeria with an opportunity to engage in parliamentary diplomacy and contribute to deliberations on issues of global and regional importance. The assembly is also considering strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of people living with disabilities.

The gathering is being hosted at the Arusha International Conference Centre, with lawmakers expected to deliberate on resolutions and adopt an outcome document reflecting the assembly’s central theme.

The 153rd IPU Assembly is also considering the election of the organisation’s new president as the tenure of outgoing IPU President Tulia Ackson approaches its end.
