Senator Dino Melaye has called for greater African representation and inclusivity in global legal and economic discussions at the ongoing International Bar Association (IBA) 2026 Annual Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Speaking at the conference, Senator Melaye drew attention to what he described as an imbalance in the composition of some conference panels, particularly the predominance of non-African moderators. He noted that while the situation may not have been deliberate, it highlights the need for greater diversity and inclusion in international legal platforms.
Melaye stressed that Africa must have a stronger voice in global conversations, especially on issues relating to economic services, international trade and policies that have direct consequences for African countries. He argued that meaningful global dialogue would be incomplete without the active participation of African professionals and experts in shaping decisions that affect the continent.
During his intervention, the former senator also highlighted several operational, economic and geopolitical challenges facing the global community under the theme, “The Trigger: Several Operational, Economic and Geopolitical Challenges.”
He identified geographical fragmentation and the structure of global trade as key issues requiring greater international cooperation. He also raised concerns about disparities between tax revenue and corporate profits, including the basis for applying conventional taxes to net profits.
Another major issue highlighted was the growing burden of corporate compliance and the legal challenges emerging from the rapid development of artificial intelligence and automation. Melaye urged legal practitioners and policymakers to anticipate these developments and create appropriate legal frameworks to address emerging challenges.
The intervention provided an opportunity for African perspectives to be brought into discussions at the international legal gathering, with emphasis on ensuring that the continent is not excluded from critical global economic and policy decisions.
According to Dr. Isaac Newton Ogunrinde, Coordinator of the One ADC Movement in Ekiti State, Melaye’s participation represented Nigeria in discussions on issues affecting Africa and the wider global community.
The IBA 2026 Annual Conference brings together legal professionals and stakeholders from different parts of the world to deliberate on contemporary legal, economic and geopolitical issues.
