Senate Confirms Salamatu Suleiman as NHRC Board Chairman and 10 Others as Members

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Salamatu Hussaina Suleiman as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), alongside 10 other members.
The confirmation was announced on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, following the consideration and adoption of the report presented by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters during plenary.

The nominees were screened to assess their qualifications, professional experience and suitability for the responsibilities of the commission. The committee subsequently recommended their confirmation after reviewing their credentials and supporting documents.
The reconstitution of the NHRC governing board is part of efforts to strengthen the commission’s institutional capacity and improve its effectiveness in promoting and protecting human rights across Nigeria.
The NHRC is responsible for investigating alleged human rights violations, promoting respect for fundamental rights and freedoms, and encouraging compliance with national and international human rights standards.
With the Senate’s confirmation, the newly approved board members are expected to contribute their professional expertise to the commission’s work, particularly in advancing human rights protection, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
The development marks another step in the reconstitution of the commission’s governing board and reinforces the importance of effective institutional oversight in safeguarding the rights of Nigerians.
