VP Departs Abuja For 80th Session Of UNGA In New York, USA

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja, Nigeria, for New York, United States of America, where he will participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The high-level event is scheduled to take place from Monday, September 22 to Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the global assembly, Vice President Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate, where world leaders will gather to discuss key international issues, including peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, and global cooperation.
In addition to his address at the UN General Assembly, the Vice President will take part in a series of high-level engagements and side events alongside other heads of state, diplomats, and stakeholders from across the world.
A major highlight of his visit will be the formal announcement of Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. This will take place during a UN special event focused on climate action, where nations are expected to reaffirm and scale up their commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering climate resilience.
The Vice President’s presence at the 80th UNGA underscores Nigeria’s active role in global diplomacy and commitment to multilateralism, especially in addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, economic development, and regional stability.
