SHETTIMA TO DECLARE 22ND EDITORS’ CONFERENCE OPEN IN ENUGU

Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to declare open the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) on Thursday, September 24, 2026, in Enugu.  

The two-day conference will hold at The Dome, International Conference Centre, Opara Square Road, Enugu, beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday and continuing on Friday, September 25.

The conference is themed “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” with the sub-theme, “When Lies Look Real: Detecting and Debunking AI Disinformation Before, During and After Election.”  

According to the NGE, Shettima is expected to address participants on democracy, elections, press freedom and national development, while Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah will also speak at the conference.

More than 500 editors, alongside government officials, academics, civil society representatives and other stakeholders, are expected to attend.

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, will chair the conference, while former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, will deliver the keynote address.

Other speakers include Professor Auwal Yadudu, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, Professor Chinyere Okunna, Professor Farooq Kperogi, Martins Oloja and Owei Lakemfa. Discussions will cover electoral justice, election petitions, election security, responsible journalism, terrorism reporting and AI-driven disinformation.  

The NGE said the conference will provide a platform for media leaders and other stakeholders to examine challenges facing democracy and explore ways of strengthening credible elections, public trust and responsible journalism.
